WCVB-TV Channel 5 captured more wins in the Adult 25-54 demographic during the March ratings period than all other Boston stations combined, and amassed significant newscast advantages, doubling or even tripling the competition’s viewership in some cases. WCVB also emerged victorious among Total Viewers in all newscasts once again while significantly growing demographic viewership, including Adults 25-54, in several key dayparts.
In Adults 25-54, WCVB was #1 in 4 out of 7 key newscasts. NewsCenter 5’s EyeOpener at 6 AM and NewsCenter 5 at 6 PM drew the most viewers in the demo overall, delivering more key viewers than all other competitive newscasts all day long (56,000 and 55,000 respectively).
WCVB is the #1 station viewers choose to start their day at 5AM and 6AM in Total Viewers 2+, Households and the key Adults 25-54 demographic, among many others. NewsCenter 5 EyeOpener dominates the daypart and kicks the morning off strong with a 51% advantage over nearest competitor WFXT at 5AM and 57% advantage over WHDH at 6AM in Total Viewers 2+.
In addition, NewsCenter 5 at Noon with Erika Tarantal and Emily Riemer extended its midday reign in Total Viewers 2+ with a 51% advantage over its nearest competitor, WHDH.
WCVB’s NewsCenter 5 advantage sustains through evening and late news time periods. NewsCenter 5 at 5 with JC Monahan and Phil Lipof and NewsCenter 5 at 6 with Heather Unruh and Ed Harding held fast to their #1 position in the key Adults 25-54 demographic and both garnered solid double-digit year-to-year increases.
Both newscasts retained their position as the “highest rated” local news broadcasts in the market in Households earning an impressive 5.71 and 7.19 rating respectively. What’s more, WCVB NewsCenter 5 at 6 is Boston’s most-watched local newscast, exceeding the Total Viewership of the 2nd (WHDH) and 3rd (WBZ) place stations combined. In Total Viewers 2+, WCVB beats its nearest competitors by significant margins: +100% over WHDH and WBZ (tied for #2) at 5PM, and +93% over WHDH at 6PM.
WCVB Channel 5’s locally produced evening magazine show Chronicle finished #2 just behind syndicated rival Jeopardy at 7:30PM in Adults 25-54 and Total Viewers 2+. The enduring fan favorite experienced noteworthy double-digit increases from year-to-year in Households (21%), Total Viewers 2+ (27%) and Adults 25-54 (27%).
WCVB continues its streak as the most-watched television station in the Boston DMA from sign-on to sign-off (Monday-Sunday 5AM-2AM) in Total Viewers 2+ in the March 2015 ratings period. This success was bolstered by the dominance of NewsCenter 5 as well as ABC World News Tonight with David Muir’s impressive 24% year-to-year increase, plus strong performances in ABC Prime Time from the The Bachelor Finale, Dancing with the Stars season premiere, and buzz-worthy series debuts of Secrets and Lies and American Crime.
