Liam Martin Joins WBZ as News Anchor

Liam Martin will be joining WBZ-TV 4 as a news anchor. Martin will co-anchor the 10pm newscast on sister station myTV38 with Paula Ebben from Monday through Thursday as well as the Sunday 6:30pm and 11pm newscasts with Kate Merrill. Martin will also report for WBZ’s early evening and 11pm newscasts from Monday-Thursday. The move was announced today by WBZ-TV News Director Gary LaPlante.

“We are excited to add one of the best reporters in Boston- and another Massachusetts native to our team of anchors,” LaPlante said, “Liam has excelled covering big stories – and we look forward to his contributions both as an anchor and reporter.”

Liam says he is thrilled to join the WBZ team.  “I grew up watching WBZ, and I’m now incredibly honored to join one of the more storied local news organizations in the country,” he said. “I can’t wait to get started.”

Liam joins WBZ from cross-town rival WCVB-TV, where he was a general assignment reporter. He’s covered a variety of stories at the station, including the Boston Olympic bid, the Market Basket saga, and the Aaron Hernandez murder trial.

Prior to moving to the Boston area, Liam worked at WILX-TV NBC 10 in Lansing, Michigan. Liam says he’s done almost every job at WILX, including weekend evening anchor and senior reporter, weekend morning anchor, weekday morning anchor, weekday evening anchor, live storm chaser/reporter, sports anchor, and sports reporter. While working in Michigan, Liam was named Best Reporter of 2012 by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. He was also awared Best Investigative Story in 2011 and Best Feature Story in 2012.

Liam’s journalism career started in 2008 when he joined the New England Sports Network (NESN), where he was a Celtics columnist for Liam joined WILX-TV in June 2009 and continued to work for until leaving both jobs to join WCVB in June 2012.

Liam graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and certifications in Spanish and French. During college, Liam served as a Summer Analyst for the CIA, and was awarded for his analytic work while working there. Liam also attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and graduated at the top of his class in 2009 with a Masters in Journalism.

A Cohasset native, Liam begins anchoring at WBZ on Monday, June 1st.
